  1. Any of a group of inherited chronic muscle
  2. disorders marked by weakening and wasting of
  3. muscle. Muscle fibres degenerate, to be
  4. replaced by fatty tissue, although the nerve
  5. supply remains unimpaired. The commonest
  6. form, Duchenne muscular dystrophy, strikes
  7. boys, usually before the age of four. The
  8. child develops a waddling gait and an inward
  9. curvature (lordosis) of the lumbar spine. The
  10. muscles affected by dystrophy and the rate of
  11. progress vary. There is no cure, but physical
  12. treatments can minimize disability.
